Overview
GST E-Invoice in India
GST E-Invoice (Electronic Invoice) is a system introduced by the Indian government to improve the accuracy and transparency of business transactions under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. It mandates that certain businesses generate invoices in a standardized electronic format and report them directly to the government’s Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) before supplying goods or services.
The primary aim of GST E-Invoicing is to reduce errors in tax reporting, prevent tax evasion, and simplify the reconciliation process for businesses and tax authorities. Once an invoice is uploaded to the IRP, it gets a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a digital signature, ensuring the authenticity of the invoice. This makes the invoice easily verifiable and trackable.
GST E-Invoice is compulsory for businesses with a turnover above a specified threshold, currently set at Rs. 20 crores or more, and is gradually being extended to smaller businesses. It also supports seamless integration with GST returns, reducing manual data entry and errors. Overall, the e-invoicing system helps create a more transparent, efficient, and robust GST compliance framework, benefiting both taxpayers and the government.
Eligibility
In India, businesses with an aggregate turnover exceeding ₹20 crore in a financial year are eligible and required to register for GST E-Invoice. This threshold applies to most states, while for special category states, it is ₹10 crore. Additionally, certain specified taxpayers, such as those involved in inter-state supply of goods or those who have opted for the QR code-based invoice system, must comply regardless of turnover. E-Invoicing is mandatory for B2B transactions to streamline GST return filing and curb tax evasion. Small businesses below the threshold are currently exempt but may voluntarily adopt the system.
