DIN stands for Director Identification Number, a unique 8-digit number issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) in India. It is mandatory for anyone who wishes to become a director of a company registered in India. The purpose of the DIN is to maintain a database of all directors and ensure transparency and accountability in corporate governance.

The process of DIN registration is straightforward and done online through the MCA portal. Applicants must submit personal details such as name, address, and identification proofs like PAN card, passport, or voter ID. Additionally, professional details and a declaration about any pending criminal cases or disqualifications must be provided.

Once the application is submitted, it is verified by the MCA, and upon successful verification, the DIN is allotted within a few days. This number is valid for a lifetime and remains the same even if the director changes companies.

DIN registration helps in preventing fraudulent appointments and strengthens the regulatory framework around company management. It is compulsory for directors to quote their DIN in all official documents, filings, and communications with the MCA.
