Overview
GST Registration in India .
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified indirect tax introduced in India on July 1, 2017. It replaced multiple state and central taxes, simplifying the taxation system. GST registration is a legal process by which a business becomes a registered taxpayer under the GST law and gets a unique 15-digit GSTIN (GST Identification Number).
GST registration is mandatory for businesses whose annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for special category states) for goods, and ₹20 lakhs (₹10 lakhs for special category states) for services. Additionally, e-commerce sellers, inter-state suppliers, and certain other categories must register regardless of turnover.
The registration process is entirely online through the GST portal (www.gst.gov.in). Required documents include PAN, Aadhaar, proof of business address, bank details, and photographs. Once registered, a business can legally collect GST from customers and claim input tax credit.
Failure to register when required can lead to penalties. Voluntary registration is also allowed, which can help small businesses gain credibility and avail input credit. Post-registration, regular return filing and compliance are mandatory.
In summary, GST registration is essential for tax compliance, business transparency, and smooth operations under India’s indirect tax system.
