Import & Export Code (IEC) in India

In India, the Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a mandatory registration number required for anyone involved in importing or exporting goods and services. It is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The IEC serves as a unique identification number that helps the government track and regulate foreign trade activities.

Obtaining an IEC is essential for businesses or individuals who want to start import or export operations. Without an IEC, customs authorities will not clear shipments, and financial institutions will not process payments related to international trade. The application process is straightforward and can be completed online through the DGFT portal.

The IEC registration does not have an expiry date or require renewal, making it a one-time investment for exporters and importers. It also helps in claiming benefits under export promotion schemes offered by the government. Moreover, having an IEC enhances the credibility of businesses in international markets.

In summary, the Importer Exporter Code is a crucial regulatory requirement for anyone dealing with cross-border trade in India. It simplifies customs clearance, allows access to government incentives, and promotes smooth international business transactions.

    Eligibility

In India, any individual, sole proprietorship, partnership firm, LLP, company, or trust engaged in import or export of goods or services must obtain an Import Export Code (IEC). It is mandatory for businesses seeking to expand internationally. There is no minimum turnover requirement for IEC registration. The applicant must have a valid PAN, bank account in the name of the business, and address proof. Even service exporters may require IEC if the service is to be availed outside India. IEC is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and is valid for a lifetime unless surrendered or canceled.
